How Does It Work?

How many treatments will I need?

The PicoSure laser delivers ultra-short picosecond pulses combined with a specialized fractional lens array. This advanced system concentrates energy into microscopic treatment zones, creating a unique photomechanical effect rather than relying solely on heat. The fractional lens array generates laser-induced optical breakdown (LIOB) in the epidermis and laser-induced cavitation in the dermis, triggering your body's natural healing response and stimulating collagen remodeling from within.

Visible improvement can often be seen after just one treatment, but a series of about 3 to 6 sessions is typically recommended for optimal outcomes on pigmentation, dark circles, sun damage, or signs of aging.

What Conditions Does PicoGlow Treat?

Clinical studies demonstrate the effectiveness of fractional picosecond laser treatment for multiple signs of facial aging and sun damage, including:

  • Uneven skin tone and sun spots
  • Skin texture irregularities
  • Enlarged pores
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne scarring
  • Overall photoaging

Research shows that patients experience meaningful aesthetic enhancement, with studies reporting satisfaction rates exceeding 90% following a series of treatments. The laser's ability to address multiple concerns simultaneously—from stubborn pigmentation to skin texture—makes it a versatile option for comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

How quickly will I recover?

Minimal Downtime, Maximum Results

One of the key advantages of PicoGlow is its favorable safety profile and minimal downtime compared to traditional ablative procedures. Most patients experience only mild, temporary side effects including redness and slight swelling that typically resolve within hours to 1-2 days. Because the treatment is non-ablative, your skin surface remains intact, allowing for faster recovery while still achieving meaningful dermal remodeling.

Treatment protocols typically involve a series of sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart, with results continuing to improve over the months following your final treatment as new collagen develops. The technology has been studied across diverse skin types and has demonstrated consistent safety and efficacy in clinical trials.

Your PicoGlow Treatment Guide FAQ

PicoGlow uses ultra-short bursts of laser energy to improve your skin's appearance. Unlike older laser treatments that rely primarily on heat, this technology creates a gentle mechanical effect that stimulates your skin's natural healing and collagen production.

We'll cleanse your skin and may apply a topical numbing cream for comfort. During the procedure, you'll feel a snapping or tingling sensation as the laser pulses are delivered. Most patients describe the discomfort as tolerable, typically mild to moderate. We may use cooling air to enhance your comfort. A full-face treatment usually takes 20-30 minutes.

Arrive with clean skin—no makeup, lotions, or creams on the treatment area. If you have a history of cold sores, please let us know, as laser treatments can sometimes trigger an outbreak; we may prescribe preventive medication. Avoid sun exposure and tanning for at least 2 weeks before treatment, as tanned or sunburned skin increases the risk of complications. If you're taking any medications that increase sun sensitivity, discuss this with your provider.

Immediately After Treatment: Your skin will appear pink or red, similar to a mild sunburn. You may notice some swelling, particularly around the eyes if that area was treated. These effects are normal and expected. Your skin may feel warm and slightly tender, and some patients notice a sandpaper-like texture or tiny dark spots—this is part of the healing process.

The First 48 Hours: Redness and swelling typically peak within the first few hours and then subside. Most patients find these effects resolve within hours to 1-2 days. You may develop light crusting or flaking, which usually appears within 24 hours and can last several days. Do not pick at any crusting or peeling skin, as this can lead to scarring or pigmentation changes. Keep your skin clean and moisturized with a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser and bland moisturizer.

Days 3-14: The Healing Phase: Any crusting will naturally shed, and peeling may occur as your skin removes the microscopic areas of treated tissue. Continue keeping your skin well-moisturized and protected. Most patients return to normal activities within 1-2 days. Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and steam rooms for the first 24-48 hours.

Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun after treatment. Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every day, even indoors. Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors and avoid direct sun exposure for at least 2 weeks after treatment. Wear a wide-brimmed hat outside. Failure to protect your skin can lead to unwanted pigmentation changes.

You may notice some immediate improvement in skin brightness and texture, but the full benefits develop gradually over the following weeks and months as your skin produces new collagen. Most patients require 3-6 treatments spaced 2-4 weeks apart for optimal results. Improvements continue for up to 3-6 months after your final treatment. Results vary by individual, and we'll customize your treatment plan based on your specific concerns and goals.

To preserve your results, continue with daily sun protection, a quality skincare routine, and periodic maintenance treatments as recommended. The improvements from PicoGlow can be long-lasting, but your skin will continue to age naturally, and new sun damage can occur without proper protection.

Am I a good candidate for this procedure?

You may be a good candidate for PicoSure laser if you’re looking to improve concerns such as sun damage, brown spots, freckles, acne scars, mild wrinkles, or uneven skin tone—without surgery or significant downtime.

This treatment is suitable for many skin types and is ideal for individuals who want gradual, natural-looking results with minimal discomfort.

The Story Behind the Technology

The PicoSure laser has multiple FDA-cleared indications and first gained recognition for revolutionizing tattoo removal. By introducing picosecond technology—delivering energy in trillionths of a second—it achieved results in half the treatments required by older devices. Researchers soon discovered that this same technology could uniquely address resistant pigmentation, and when combined with a fractional lens array, it could also improve fine lines, skin texture, and acne scarring .

What makes PicoSure truly exceptional is its remarkable safety profile across all skin types. This is why it's used worldwide for treating stubborn, difficult-to-clear pigmentation—working much like a tattoo laser to break apart resistant pigment that other treatments can't reach.
